Thomas P. Ives House

A distinguished Federal-style residence built in 1808 for Hope Brown Ives and her husband Thomas Poynton Ives, this brick “cube” reflects the refined tastes of the period and the prominence of the Brown & Ives mercantile family. Originally simpler in form, it was expanded in the early 1880s by architects Stone, Carpenter & Willson, who added a rear ell, heightened the semi-circular bay, and remodeled the front porch. Around the same time, Frederick Law Olmsted designed the extensive brick-walled gardens to the east. Located on College Hill, the house contributes to multiple historic districts and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Viewing from nearby vantage points reveals its relationship to other notable Brown family residences.
