The Stephen Hopkins House

The Stephen Hopkins House is a preserved 1707 home offering guided tours that explore the life and legacy of Declaration of Independence signer Stephen Hopkins, his family, and the enslaved people who lived there. Located on the “Mile of History,” the eight-room house features period antiques, Hopkins family heirlooms, a bedchamber where George Washington reportedly stayed, a slaves’ room, and rotating exhibits such as 18th-century samplers. Open year-round with seasonal weekend hours and appointments available, it provides insight into colonial architecture, Revolutionary-era politics, and Rhode Island’s complex social history.
