Atwells Avenue

Atwells Avenue is the vibrant main street running through Providence’s Federal Hill, the city’s historic “Little Italy.” It evolved from an early‑19th‑century road and became a dense immigrant commercial corridor by the early 1900s. Today it remains the heart of Federal Hill, lined with Italian eateries, specialty food shops, boutiques, and communal gathering spots such as DePasquale Plaza and Garibaldi Square. The A.F. Cappelli Block, a four‑story mixed‑use building dating from 1909 with ground‑floor storefronts and upper‑floor residences, stands as an architectural landmark anchoring the street’s historic fabric.
