First Baptist Church

Historic structure. Origins date to 1638 with Roger Williams. Current meetinghouse built in 1774–75, designed by Joseph Brown in Georgian‑Colonial style that blends New England meeting‑house form with English Anglican steeple design, notably based on James Gibbs’s plans. As the oldest Baptist church in America it functions as both worship site and Brown University’s commencement venue. Interior contains a renowned Waterford crystal chandelier (1792) and retains much of its original layout, restored with Rockefeller support in the 1950s. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
