John Brown House Museum

A refined three‑story brick mansion completed in 1788, this house stands as a masterful example of late‑Georgian (Federal) architecture, designed by the owner’s brother, Joseph Brown. It was the first grand residence erected in Providence and hosted notable visitors—including George Washington—earning John Quincy Adams’s praise as “the most magnificent and elegant private mansion that I have ever seen on this continent”. Now a museum operated by the Rhode Island Historical Society, it retains original 18th‑century furnishings, wall maps, artwork, and even a fully restored carriage known as “Washington’s Chariot”.
