Providence’s Amtrak/MBTA station, opened in 1986, serves as the city’s third major rail facility. It anchors intercity Acela and Northeast Regional services alongside commuter trains on the MBTA Providence/Stoughton Line.
Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill under Marilyn Jordan Taylor, the station features a modest one-story structure with a shallow dome and central rotunda—a deliberate echo of the nearby State House’s architecture—and a corner clock tower to anchor its skyline presence. Set atop buried rail lines, it reconnects the city core while prioritizing pedestrian flow via plazas and landscaped entryways . The station includes two island platforms serving four passenger tracks plus a fifth freight track, and is fully accessible.
