The original site of the Great Salt Cove. Finished in 1994, Waterplace Park is connected to 3/4 mile of cobblestone-paved pedestrian walkways along the waterfront known as Riverwalk. Venice-styled pedestrian bridges cross the river. Most of Riverwalk is below street level and automotive traffic. Waterplace Park and Riverwalk together are host to Providence's popular summertime Waterfire events, a series of bonfires lit on the river accompanied by classical and world music.

🔥 **Help us Give Back with Vincent Lafazia Design! 🔥**
Dear friends and supporters,
Way back in October, we were thrilled to auction off a stunning, handcrafted desk by Vincent Lafazia Design at the WaterFire Providence Fireball Gala. The proceeds were meant to benefit the incredible work of WaterFire Providence in our community.
Unfortunately, the gentleman who won the auction has, regrettably, ghosted us. 😢 However, we`re not letting this setback dampen our spirits!
This beautifully crafted desk is still looking for its forever home, and we`re determined to use it to continue supporting WaterFire Providence. 💙
Here`s where you come in: we need your help to find a new owner for this exquisite piece. By purchasing this desk, you`re not only acquiring a unique work of art but also contributing to a great cause.
Let`s turn this situation around and make a positive impact together! If you or someone you know is interested in this desk, please reach out to us. We appreciate your support, and every share brings us one step closer to finding a loving home for Sugar the Desk to support our friends at waterfireprov / waterfireartscenter
Swipe left to enjoy this adorable photo of our sweet Sugar in the shop and another one featuring the artist, his wife, and their bestie, all smiles while posing with the stunning desk at the unforgettable Fireball gala. Little did we know that just days later, poor Sugar would be abandoned. 💔

Today’s Waterplace Park, with its circular lagoon, harkens back to the taming of the great salt cove that 200 years ago stretched from today’s Kennedy Plaza to the bottom of Smith Hill, to Canal Street (once called North Water) on its eastern shore and through the valley between Smith Hill and Federal Hill to the west. The city began filling in and shaping the cove—a process that was eventually driven by the expansions of railroads—and by 1850 the downtown portion of the cove had been tamed into the beginnings of a circle. By the 1880s, the circle was complete, lined by a pedestrian promenade and renamed the Cove Basin. By 1900 the cove had vanished completely. This photo was taken in 1983.

Helen Rowe Metcalf changed the course of Providence history when she chose to invest in education instead of a public monument. In 1877, she used leftover funds from the Rhode Island Women’s Centennial Commission to found what would become the Rhode Island School of Design (@risd1877) a bold move many thought was too risky for women to lead.
Her vision created a space where early students—mostly women—could study jewelry-making, furniture design, and textiles, supporting Providence’s booming industries. Metcalf personally shaped the school’s curriculum, teaching standards, and daily operations, laying the foundation for one of the world’s top art and design schools.
Today, RISD stands as a testament to women’s leadership, creativity, and innovation in art, design, and Rhode Island history. Her legacy continues to inspire students, makers, and the entire Providence RI community.

Thousands of you joined us in downtown Providence this weekend as we honored Día de los Muertos in partnership with @rilatinoarts, @waterfirepvd, and local artists.
At the Downtown Providence Park Network, our hope was for you to learn and experience the scared Mexican tradition. The bright marigolds, or cempasúchil, guided the spirits home with their color and fragrance. Candles lit their way with warmth and light. Pan de Muerto represented the circle of life and the love that endures. We shared more than 500 pieces baked by the family at @la.artesa.bakery with hot chocolate as families, friends, and visitors gathered to honor their loved ones. The ofrenda held photos, water, and cherished mementos, creating a bridge between the living and the departed. Traditional Mexican dance @grupomisolha filled the evening with music.
Thank you for adding the name of your loved ones to the ofrenda by @alhteran. In Providence, everyone belongs.
