Cranston Street Armory

A landmark of Rhode Island military and civic history, the Cranston Street Armory is a monumental Medieval Gothic structure designed by William R. Walker & Son and completed in 1907 at the southern edge of Dexter Training Ground. Built of yellow brick with fortress-like towers and elaborate detailing, it housed the Rhode Island National Guard until 1997 and long served as a public venue for track meets, dog shows, inaugural balls, and community events. Noted for its vast central drill hall and prominent skyline presence, the site has faced years of underuse and ongoing preservation challenges while stakeholders explore redevelopment that honors its architectural significance and community role.
