This photo, taken in Providence, Rhode Island, during the WaterFire Festival, beautifully captures the contrast between blazing firelight and quiet human presence. Two large braziers burn brightly on the river, their flames leaping into the night and casting shimmering golden reflections across the water. In the foreground, silhouetted figures of people stand together, watching the spectacle in awe. The interplay of fiery brightness, glowing embers, and dark shadows creates a dramatic, almost ritualistic atmosphere that embodies the unique energy of WaterFire — a celebration of community, light, and reflection.

Tonight’s waterfireprov was all about celebrating Rhode Island educators — and BVP was well represented!

🌟 ES3 teacher Brianna Nagy was honored as our District Teacher of the Year
🌟 BVPHS Dean Nate Deysher was recognized for earning his National Board Certification
🌟 Silvia Muñoz Ruiz, Central Falls’ Teacher of the Year, was joined by her children: Alejandro, a BVP alum and current Yale University sophomore, and Sarah, a current BVP junior.

It was an inspiring reminder of the incredible talent, dedication, and community spirit that make BVP so special.

History

The “Washington Buildings” once occupied the spot where the Hospital Trust Building is now, so we’re looking at what is today the northwest corner of Westminster and Memorial Blvd. Above the building, you can see the tower tops for the original Union Station, so we know this photo was taken before 1896, probably in the late 1880s or early 1890s.

People of Difference (POD)

People of Difference (POD)

Wild Canary aka Chris Cox’s “POD” sculpture, installed in Providence in 2016, is a monumental work built from weather-resistant fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Composed of flat, monolithic panels arranged to evoke the form of a sperm whale, the piece reflects Cox’s background in boat building and his vision of adapting marine fabrication techniques for public art. The title, POD—short for People of Difference—carries a deeper meaning, symbolizing solidarity among marginalized groups facing extinction pressures similar to those endured by whales. Located along the riverwalk at 345 South Water Street, the sculpture embodies Cox’s commitment to creating large-scale public art rooted in themes of coexistence and resilience. When posting a photo of this artwork use #PODpvd to share it with the artist.
