House Work: Contemporary Design at Lippitt House Museum
What happens when contemporary furniture designers rethink a historic house? Find out at House Work: Objects, Occupants and Conditions at Lippitt House Museum, on view October 7–24 at Providence’s National Historic Landmark, Lippitt House Museum.
Featuring work by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Furniture Design students, the exhibition brings contemporary objects and fresh perspectives into the museum’s beautifully preserved 19th-century interiors. Drawing on research into class, gender, labor, technology, and Providence’s industrial history, the students’ work invites visitors to consider how furniture, architecture, and domestic life reflect the people and forces that shaped them.
On view: October 7–24, Wednesday–Sunday, 12–5 p.m.
Admission: Pay what you wish
Special event: Meet the RISD students and instructors at an exhibition reception on October 15, 5–8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public; advance registration is requested.
