Built in 1866–67 and designed by Alfred Stone, the General Ambrose Burnside Mansion is a notable Second Empire residence on College Hill distinguished by smooth pressed-brick walls, a sweeping mansard roof, and a curving corner elevation that addresses its steep, trapezoidal lot; a later Queen Anne oriel enhances its Benefit Street façade. Once hailed as one of the city’s finest modern houses, it later served social service organizations, became apartments in the mid-20th century, and was listed among the Providence Preservation Society’s Most Endangered Properties in 2009, with ongoing preservation needs noted as recently as 2019.
